The very name given man – homosapiens – means “thinking man.” When biologists refer to our “higher capacities” they are talking about the characteristic that separates man from animals – the capacity to think rationally and solve problems, the portion of the brain that is under man’s control. So it is perhaps understandable that when most of us contemplate “the brain,” we think only about using logic, or “figuring things out.” We use phrases like “use your brain,” or “going out of your mind,” phrases that equate the brain with thought, a function that occurs in a part of the brain called the neocortex. But the neocortex, actually a thin coating no more than ¼ inch thick is both more limited in its functions and less responsible for our happiness and success than most of us believe. Similar to a computer that generates alternatives and choices, the neocortex does not even produce those “rational” decisions of which we are all so proud. In fact, Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence estimates that only 10% to 20% of our success is due to IQ. The rest, he believes, is due to luck and ”Emotional Intelligence” (EQ), a skill that rests in a different part of the brain—the amygdala.
